Signed for £3.5m from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2008, Cattermole proved a combative, reliable performer for Wigan Athletic over the following season. A regular for the England Under 21 side, he subsequently followed Steve Bruce to Sunderland for a fee in the region of £6m.

News: Could return a month ahead of schedule. It was feared that the £6million midfielder would be out until the new year after surgery on the knee ligaments he damaged at Liverpool last month but he has been given the green light to step up his rehabilitation. Cattermole has been allowed to take the protective brace off his knee, and Steve Bruce said: "There's no way we'll rush him but, because of the type of lad he is, I'd expect Lee to be back quicker than predicted."
